Kind Clients Are Your Best Business Strategy
They elevate the work and the people around you
There’s a belief in our industry that the “best” clients are the ones with the biggest budgets, the fastest growth, the most impressive networks. We used to think that way, too.
However, over the years, we’ve learned that the best clients are kind people. They’re not the surface-level kind of “nice”. They’re the kind of people whose values shape how they operate, treat others, and what they’re trying to create for the world.
You can usually tell from the very first conversation. The energy is different; you know it when you feel it. It shows up in the ways they listen, in the respect they show for your questions, and in their genuine desire for your input. There’s also a generosity in the way they communicate.
More importantly, they recognize your craft and the many years it took to develop it. They understand that the five minutes it might take you to build the strategic scaffolding is the result of years of refining that muscle. So, they pay for your expertise—and your speed—rather than the time it took to execute.
But even beyond that, there’s something deeper underneath all of this. These are people who don’t operate from scarcity. They are builders. They understand that success isn’t finite, and that doing good work and treating people well will never be in conflict with growing a dynamite business. In other words, they’re not driven to take as much as they can from every interaction; they’re not extractive.
What ends up happening is that the work improves because of their trust. You’re not second-guessing or feeling the need to justify every move or recommendation. Instead, there’s more mental space to think bigger and explore ideas. You spend more time experimenting with technology, finding better ways to engage their audience, and creating work that’s both beautiful and impactful. Ultimately, it becomes your best work.
And just as much, they’re also people you’d want in your life beyond work. When they’re in town, you invite them over for dinner, because introducing them to your family would never feel transactional.
Gradually, another level of relationship is built. They talk about you and share your name. And the people they bring into your world often share those same values. So, gradually, your network becomes something else entirely—a community of people who are generous and rooting for one another. Eventually, it morphs into the kind of environment you never want to leave.
